Chemical Waste Management

General Requirement

For chemical wastes stored at a workplace with volume < 50 L:

For chemical wastes stored at a workplace with volume > 50 L but < 300 L:

Remedial action is necessary if the answer to any one item is "NO".

(a)   Storage of more than 300 L must obtain prior approval by HSEO.

(b)   For small volume waste generators, the container for temporary storage of chemical waste should be labeled with waste type and content. The locations of the standard chemical waste containers that the chemical waste will be finally disposed of should be marked on the bottle.  HSEO designed a standard label for such non-standard container, and a copy is available through each Departmental Safety Officer.

(c)   A Chemical waste log sheet is not necessary for some waste types. They are "Spent Film Fixer & Developer", "Spent Lube Oil", "Spent Organic Gel, Lab", "Spent Metal Sludge", "Spent Phenol Sludge" and "Rags with Solvents/Oils". A Chemical waste log sheet is not attached to these containers upon delivery by HSEO.    Photocopy of the chemical waste log sheet can be made from the booklet "procedures for Disposal of Chemical Waste" appendix E and "The HKUST Safety and Environmental Protection Manual" appendix 16E.

(d)   A spill tray or retention structure is not necessary for solid wastes.
