A. Mandatory Courses Details
MC01 Radiation Safety With unsealed Radioactive Materials (e-learning materials)
This course covers general radiation safety, regulatory requirements, HKUST radiation safety policy and precautions in handling unsealed radioactive materials.
MC02 Radiation Safety with Sealed Radioactive Materials and Irradiating Apparatus (e-learning materials)
This course covers general radiation safety, regulatory requirements, HKUST radiation safety policy and precautions in handling sealed radioactive sources and irradiating apparatus.
MC03 Chemical Safety II / Hazardous Waste Management (e-learning materials)
This course covers regulatory requirements, HKUST waste management policy, technical issues and disposal of hazardous wastes.
MC04 Laser Safety (e-learning materials)
This course covers classification of lasers, potential beam and non-beam-related hazards of laser operations and the safety management of these equipment.
MC05 Pressure Safety (e-learning materials)
This course describes potential hazards, safety measures and procedures for operating different types of pressure systems (boilers, air receivers, gas cylinders, pressure vessels, hydraulic systems etc.) in HKUST.
MC06 Biological Safety (e-learning materials)
This course covers the classification of biological hazards, control categories such as Biological (BSL) 1,2,3 and 4. It also addresses topics of sterilization and disinfection, biological waste treatment, etc.
This course is mandatory for personnel who work with pathogenic microorganisms of class II and above.
MC07 Chemical Safety I / Chemical Safety for Laboratory Users (e-learning materials)
This course provides a comprehensive review of chemical safety issues. It also discuss HKUST emergency procedures, the classification, quantitation, description and control of chemical hazards encountered in the workplace.
This course is mandatory for staff and students who work with hazardous chemicals.
MC08 Chemical Safety for Operational Staff
This course is designed to familiarize maintenance staff with the hazards and safety precautions in handling pesticides and housekeeping chemicals.
This course is mandatory for CMO operational staff and contractor who work with hazardous chemicals. Online training is not available for this course. Email HSEO at communal@ust.hk to arrange for an in-class training.
MC09 Respiratory Protection (e-learning materials)
This course covers the availability of various respiratory protective equipment, their use and limitations and regulatory requirements related to their use and maintenance.
This course is mandatory for personnel who use respiratory protective equipment.
MC10 Self-contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) (5 days) In-class training provided by Fire Services Department (FSD)
This five-day course is conducted by the Fire Services Department at their training centre. It covers the use, limitations and maintenance of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and provides training practice in various conditions such as entry into smoke filled rooms and confined spaces.
This course is mandatory for all SCBA users. Online training is not available for this course. Email HSEO at communal@ust.hk to arrange for an in-class training.
MC11 SCBA Refresher Course (2 hours) In-class training
This course is designed to refresh (three times a year), SCBA users on the use and maintenance of the apparatus.
This course is mandatory for continued approval to use SCBA. Online training is not available for this course. Email HSEO at communal@ust.hk to arrange for an in-class training.
B. Discretional Courses Details
DC04 Electrical Safety (e-learning materials)
This course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the dangers of electricity (including high voltages) and common electrical hazards; and to provide basic knowledge on safety measures and procedures to prevent accidents.
This course is intended for technical and operational personnel who have frequent exposures to electrical hazards and therefore require a better knowledge on the subject.
C. Other Safety Courses
“Press to shock - Save a life" CPR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) & Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Course - In-class training provided by Fire Services Department (FSD)
This course is conducted by Fire Services Department. It covers theory and practice in training for "one rescuer CPR" and obstructed airway clearance, and basic introduction to the use of AED.
This course is intended for representatives of each department. Look out for all-member emails for training schedule and availability.
