A. INTRODUCTION

It is HKUST policy to ensure that employees and students who are engaged in potentially hazardous operations receive both general and job-specific safety training prior to conducting these operations. Each department will establish a management scheme to implement this policy. Each supervisor will evaluate the nature of the work and will determine what safety training is needed for employees and students under his/her supervision.

General safety courses listed below cover a wide variety of safety issues. In addition to assigning employees and students to attend these courses, supervisors shall also provide job-specific safety training to ensure the safe performance of potentially hazardous operations.

B. TYPES OF GENERAL SAFETY COURSES

1. Mandatory courses (MC)

These courses provide training which are required by government regulations or university policy. Departmental management must ensure that concerned personnel shall attend the relevant courses. Most MC courses are available through e-learning.

Participants have to going through online tests in order to get a completion of these courses. Those who fail will have to re-take the class. Some of the mandatory courses (also Discretional Courses) are available online, please check out section C TAKING THE ONLINE TESTS below.

 

2. Discretional Courses (DC)

These courses cover safety issues for which there is no legal requirement for training. They are intended to provide information on commonly accepted practices, and to raise safety awareness of concerned personnel. Departmental management should evaluate course contents and work or study assignment to determine whether their staff and students should be required to take these courses.

 

3. Other Safety Courses

These courses provide information in other areas of health and safety. However these courses are not hosting in regular basis that require special arrangement and can be regarded as customized safety training upon request by departments or units. Please contact HSEO through communal@ust.hk for further details.

C. TAKING THE ONLINE TESTS 

The online tests provides flexibility of completing the MCs and DCs. After studying the e-learning materials, participants shall apply for taking corresponding tests in order to complete the course.

D. SAFETY ORIENTATION FOR LABORATORY USERS

It is a MANDATORY requirement for all laboratory workers to attend this orientation, which contains important research and laboratory safety information, including
 - lessons learned from serious laboratory accidents
 - University President's directive on safety
 - research safety management at HKUST
 - your roles and responsibilities in research and laboratory safety
 - services and support available from HSEO and other campus units

E. ENGINEERING STUDENT SAFETY TRAINING (ESST)

The ESST provides technical knowledge regarding selected topics for engineering students delivering in different modules, including Occupational Health, Safety Management, Electrical & Pressure Safety, Chemical Safety, Laser & Radiation Safety and Fire Safety. The ESST is currently delivered online training through an eLearning platform, Canvas. Completion of ESST is a requirement for graduation.

 

Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering requires an additional training module, the in-class Mandatory Basic Safety Training (Construction Work) (also know as "Green Card" training) for completing the industrial training programme. A certain number of engineering students receive the in-class "Green Card" training each year, and it counts toward the requirements of the industrial training programme. Besides, under special circumstances, online Construction Safety module can be an option to students who do not require the in-class "Green Card" certificate for future career.

Students participating the ESST will receive emails from Industrial Training Center (ITC) of Department of Engineering regarding the arrangement. Normally, the ESST online training platform portal opens during the winter break for year 1 and year 2 students.
