The Central Nervous System

This schematic shows the distribution of the human nervous system. When the spinal chord is injured, the corresponding parts of the body will be affected. The most easily injured part of the spine is the lumber region (lower back) which will bear most of the pressure when the back is bent. This may lead to the compression of the nerve roots controlling the lower back and the legs, causing severe pains. Sciatica is one of these common pains caused when the sciatic nerve (running down the back of the legs) is compressed.
